Jardine William T. 'Bill' Jardine, 86, died Nov. 19, 2003 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eileen. Also survived by three daughters and two sons, Jill Jardine Harder (Jim), Cross Lake, MN & Rio Verde, AZ; Judy Jardine Stucki (Frank), Minnetonka; Mary Jardine Mueller (Tim), Plymouth; John Jardine, Minneapolis; and Jeffrey Jardine (DeVonne), West Des Moines, Iowa; and two brothers, Donald M. Jardine (Marian), Lilydale, MN; and Thomas D. Jardine, Edina. Surviving grandchildren include, Matthew Swenson (Lea), West Bend, Wis.; Molly Cox (John), Minneapolis; Michael Stucki, Minnetonka, MN; Melissa Stucki Stevens (Ben), New York City; Jessica &Christina Mueller, Plymouth; Timothy and Amber Jardine, West Des Moines, Iowa; great-granddaughter, Olivia Swenson. Jardine had been in the Circulation Department of the Minneapolis Star Tribune for 44 years, retiring in 1982 as the Department's Manager. He was born in Superior, Wis., in 1917, the son of the late Thomas F. & Helen M. Jardine. The family moved to St. Paul in the early Twenties and then, a few years later, to Mpls Jardine's father was in the life insurance business. Bill Jardine attended elementary schools in St. Paul and Minneapolis before entering De La Salle High School in Minneapolis in 1932 where he starred in basketball on the school's 1935 and 1936 teams. He was also named All State during those years. The late Halsey Hall, well-known broadcaster and sports writer for the Minneapolis Star and Minneapolis Journal, called Jardine 'one of the best basketball players in the state. At only 5 foot 10 inches he could leap over others and touch the basketball hoop rim - not common in those days,' recalled Hall. Not only did De La Salle win the state Catholic title in 1935 and 1936 but went on to the nationals in both those years. Hall used to referee basketball games at De La Salle's school gym so he captured a good perspective of Jardine's playing abilities. Under the coaching leadership and guidance of the late George Roberts, De La Salle produced some of the top basketball teams in Minnesota in th Thirties and still does to this day. He also played halfback for De La Salle and briefly freshman football under Bernie Bierman at the University of Minnesota before leaving school and joining the Minneapolis Star's circulation department in 1938. He also was a catcher for the American Legion ball teams in those days playing most of the games at Pershing Field in south Minneapolis. Jardine's first love was his family but his job in the circulation department of the Minneapolis Star and Tribune came a close second. During his 44 years in the circulation department, he eventually had supervision over 15,000 newspaper boy and girl carriers and 1200 adult farm service drivers who delivered newspapers to the farms of the Upper Midwest. At the time, it was the largest daily newspaper carrier distribution force in the world and it included Minnesota, North and South Dakota and western Wisconsin referred collectively as the Upper Midwest. In 1943, during the height of World War II, Jardine enlisted in the U.S. Army. He received his basic training in Texas before being selected for Officer's Training at Fort Benning, GA. He graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry and was immediately sent overseas to prepare with thousands of others for the invasion of Europe. He joined General George Patton's Third Army as it raced across France toward Germany. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1944 during this campaign. Jardine distinguished himself in battle near Nancy, France in fierce fighting between the Allies and the Germans where he was awarded the Silver and Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and one of Frances's highest military honors, the Croix de Guerre for valor under fire from the enemy. He also was awarded the Purple Heart, American theater, the Defense and the European-African Middle East and World War II Victory medals plus five major battle stars and two clusters.

Jardine (Cont.) During this period, he also earned a battle field promotion to Captain. He participated in the battles for northern and southern France, Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe under Generals Patton and Simpson. After the surrender of Germany, Jardine returned to the states via the famous liner Queen Mary which had been made into a troopship. He was greeted when the ship docked in New York City's harbor by his older brother, Donald. Donald was stationed in New York City with the FBI. The elder Jardine easily boarded the troopship loaded with thousands of GIs and found his brother aboard before the troops were let go ashore. In 1946, he rejoined the Star Tribune Newspaper and began his meteoric rise in the circulation business not only with the Minneapolis newspapers but as one of the best known circulation executives in North America and Europe. He was named to the newspaper circulation industry's top post in 1981 by his peers as President, International Circulation Managers Association (ICMA). The ceremony took place at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. His entire family flew to New York City to see him inducted. ICMA represented the top circulation executives from nearly every major daily newspaper in North America, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, South America and Japan with a combined circulation of over 100 million subscribers. During his time in the newspaper circulation business, he received more than 26 awards for outstanding contributions to the newspaper industry. As circulation manager for the Star and Tribune, his name became a household word in the Upper Midwest with families who had youngsters who delivered newspapers during his 44 years with the newspaper. Hundreds of promotional letters signed by Jardine to these carriers were read by the entire household (and in schools) where the young boy and girl lived. His name recognition became even more apparent when Jardine and his colleagues launched the Ski-O-Rama and Water Safety program in the Upper Midwest. Its purpose was to teach boys and girls to water ski and learn the rudiments of water safety. Even though Minnesota has 10,000 lakes-plus, newspaper circulation executives discovered that many of these young carriers and their friends had never learned to water ski. Ski-O-Rama, launched in the Sixties, filled young boy's and girls's dream as water skiing's popularity was just breaking on the national scene. Thousands of carrier boys and girls and their friends earned the right to participate by selling so many subscriptions to the Minneapolis Star and Minneapolis Tribune. Thousands of young people throughout the Upper Midwest learned to water ski in this program. Programs and promotions like this helped Jardine and his circulation colleagues boost the total circulation of the Star and Tribune to over 700,000 on Sunday and to over 500,000 during the week -- making it, at the time, the 10th largest newspaper in the nation. When Jardine joined the old Minneapolis Star in 1938, its circulation was about 50,000. Besides building a carrier force of over 15,000, he was a leader in building prestige in delivering newspapers as young person's first job and the start of the road to success for young people. He was instrumental in helping build the PRESS Club -- which stands for Paper Route Experience Spells Success. It is a large club made up of thousands of people around the world from every walk of life who once delivered newspapers for any newspaper. While there are no dues or meetings, each member receives a PRESS Club card which pointed out the importance and prestige of receiving early business training when you were a young boy or girl by delivering newspapers. Jardine delivered the old Minneapolis Star in 1927 in south Minneapolis, including an area now known as Southdale. One of his most colorful personal efforts was his role as a professional clown. He and hundreds of Minneapolis area businessmen and women formed a clown club called the 'Aqua Jesters.' A national magazine covered their efforts in an article entitled 'Clowns After Dark.' Initially sponsored by the Star Tribune, the clowns were among the highlights of the still-held annual Minneapolis Summer Festival called the 'Minneapolis Aquatennial.'

Renwick John 'Jack' Renwick, age 76, of Edina. Survived by his wife of 44 years, Sue, and childen, Foster, Margaret (Paul), Mary, Lisa (Ron), John, Sarah (Chris) and brother, Foster. A DeLaSalle graduate, Jack spent over 30 years in retail. Since the early `80s he has worked in the computer industry and was the owner of Rainbow Computer Technology in Edina. This blue-eyed, avid sportsman, adventurer, and storyteller will be missed by many. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Grace in Edina on Wed., Nov. 26, at 12 noon with visitation starting at 10:30. Memorials prefered to Habitat for Humanity or donor's choice

Jardine (Cont.) Jardine appeared every year in the Festival's annual parades for 25 consecutive years. The Aqua Jesters still march in this annual parade. Jardine also made audio training tapes for use by other newspaper circulation executives designed to teach young men and women the importance of delivering newspaper as a form of early business training -- namely to GET and KEEP circulation. He also published two books on newspaper circulation designed for use by newspaper circulation executives. He played a key role in the Star and Tribune scholarship program. The program helped qualified carriers to obtain scholarships to some of the nation's top scholastic institutions. Ahead of his time, Jardine was among the first to promote girls to be newspaper carriers. For many years, this training was limited to young boys. Jardine often noted that girls sometimes are even better and more conscientious than boys in fulfilling their roles as newspaper carrier sales persons. After he retired in 1982, Jardine traveled for eight years around the nation and to Great Britain giving seminars for newspaper circulation executives. These seminars were usually held at the executive's own newspaper. At the time of his retirement, he was saluted with a giant outdoor billboard in downtown Minneapolis thanking him for his 44 years of service -- the thank you coming from his newspaper carriers. The billboard, lighted at night, could be seen for blocks in downtown Minneapolis. In December, 1992, Jardine was named by his peers to the 'Newspaper Carrier Hall of Fame.' This honor and his many other recognitions in newspaper circulation was the subject of a full page ad in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. The ad, one of the few ever done in that size for any Star and Tribune employee, was run during National Newspaper Week, 1992. Pohlad Eloise O'Rourke Pohlad, a woman known for her love and dedication to family, quiet generosity and grace, passed away November 20, with her husband, sons and other family members at her side. The heart of the Pohlad family, Eloise was deeply loved by her husband of 56 years, Carl; and her three sons, Jim, Bob and Bill, who saw her as the perfect wife and mother. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa on Jan. 26, 1917, the youngest of 10 children. Her family was well-known and loved in the Dubuque community. Fiercely proud of their Irish heritage and deeply committed to their Catholic faith, the O'Rourkes set an example of family togetherness and love that Eloise fulfilled with her own family. She was educated in Catholic grade and high schools, and attended Mundelein College in Chicago. After college, Eloise returned home to Dubuque and worked as a receptionist, teller and bookkeeper for the American Trust and Savings Bank. She met Carl Pohlad on a blind date at a University of Iowa/University of Minnesota football game. It was love at first sight, and five months later on April 22, 1947, they were married in a quiet ceremony at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Key West, Iowa, now a suburb of Dubuque. Always putting her husband and sons first, Eloise made time to be involved in the Boys and Girls Club, WAMSO, the Carondelet HealthCare Foundation, the Twin Cities Opera Guild, and the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministries Foundation, where she actively supported their programs for children, families and individuals in need. Eloise was gracious to all she met. Her interests throughout life were the simple pleasures: enjoying ice cream, doing the laundry and ironing, spending time with her sons and their families, and attending the Minnesota Twins baseball games. She grew to love baseball after her husband bought the Minnesota Twins, becoming one of the team's biggest fans. McAllister June Zumwinkle McAllister There are people in this busy, noisy world who are so quiet, so modest, so undemanding of attention, so lacking in need for recognition and reward - that it is possible for such a person to slip by rather unnoticed, even if that person has lived a life of exceptional quality and has possessed attributes desperately needed. One such person was June Zumwinkle McAllister, who: - had an abiding com mitment to family; - had a special connection with children and young adults; - loved beauty in nature, music, the visual arts, and architecture; - was deeply offended by instances of social and economic injustice; - was always available to offer unconditionally kind words and comfort to neighbors, friends, and family and - continued to learn throughout her entire life. - Was inspired by extraordinary people such as Susan B. Anthony, Henry David Thoreau, Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Ben Shahn, Marian Anderson, Mulford Q. Sibley and Richard Zumwinkle. Is it any wonder that her friends and family loved her, were inspired by her, and are so thankful to be forever indebted to her? June McAllister, age 81, passed away on October 21, 2003. A memorial service / 'celebration of her life' will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Avenue South, Edina, Minnesota. June was born on June 26, 1922 in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. In 1940, she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. June attended the University of Minnesota for four years, majoring in Architecture. She was one of few women attending the school's Institute of Technology at that time. While at the University of Minnesota, June met dental student, Charles McAllister, whom she married on August 5, 1946. Shortly afterward, June accompanied her husband to Germany where he was stationed for two years. As Dr. McAllister built a thriving dental practice in the 1950's, June became a mother adored by her kids and neighbors alike. She and Charles moved to Edina in 1953, where they lived for fifty years. With equal portions of modesty and humor, June was the moral compass of her family. June enjoyed most quiet activities such as reading, listening, watching, and working in her yard. June was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Minnette Zumwinkle; her brother, Richard Zumwinkle; and sister-in-law, Lois 'Liz' Zumwinkle. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Dr. Charles McAllister of Edina; her son, Robert McAllister and his wife Genie and daughter Lauren; her son, Bruce McAllister and his wife Clare and children Janna and Andrew; her brother, Robert Zumwinkle and his wife Kate; her sister, Barbara Mathewson and her husband Don; her sister-in-law, Margaret Zumwinkle; and nine nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of June may be made to Minnesota Public Radio, 45 East Seventh Street, St. Paul, MN 55101 (651-290-1212 or 800-228-7123).

Horan Leona St. Claire Fagan Horan passed away on November, 21, 2003 at the age of 84. Survived by son, Jay (John Joseph Patrick) Horan Jr.; daughter-in-law, Maureen Phillips; and grandchildren, Alexis and Ashley Horan. Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Leona served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, John Joseph Horan, Sr. She and John spent most of their lives in Pennsylvania. Leona was an artist, lover of music and song, and a voracious reader. A quick-witted Irish woman with an infectious laugh, Leona lived every day of her life fully with a remarkable spirit of adventure. She and her husband, John, traveled together extensively throughout their lives. Her greatest passion, however, was for her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren for whom she had unconditional love and endless devotion. A private memorial service for her family is planned. Her ashes will be interred with her husband's in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to hospice.
